    Joanne's Helpline: Printed Glass

Q I have a friend living abroad who recently had her bathroom refurbished and she had a feature wall of a glass panel with an enlarged photo printed onto it. Can any firms in the UK do this?

A Since the advent of flatbed technologies, printing onto glass has become more feasible, though screen printing onto glass is still popular. Obviously, for an application like this you’d want to be sure the glass was hard-wearing. Printed Panels (www.printedpanels.co.uk) in Worcestershire uses flatbed digital technology to print images onto glass panels for this kind of thing. Contact Adrian Hall at adrian.hall@printedpanels.co.uk. I also believe glass manufacturer Independent Glass produces screen-printed toughened glass. Email toughened@ig-glass.co.uk or call 0141 429 8700. I recently heard about a company in Australia, Axolotl Ozone (www.axolotl-group.com), which uses a high-definition inkjet process to print onto the interlayer of a glass panel, which is then sandwiched between two layers of toughened glass. They claim it’s a unique process, but I’d be interested to hear otherwise from a British firm. There’s a German company called Interpane (www.interpane.net, 0049 1728 671 278) that applies high-resolution digital print onto glass with ceramic ink so, really depending on whether you’re interested for your own bathroom or as a business idea, they’d be worth a call.
